JACO

JACO

description

Jacó was recently founded (mid-20th century), although the area was inhabited since the pre-Columbian era by natives of the Huetar ethnic group, settled in dispersed villages; At the beginning of the Conquest, the main chief was Garabito, who gave rise to the name of the canton. The discoverer of the region was Don Gil González Dávila, in the year 1522, when he made the first tour of the national territory, from the southeastern sector of it to the indigenous town of Avancari (today Abangaritos, canton of Puntarenas). In law No. 20 of October 18, 1915, on territorial division for administrative purposes, the hamlets Las Agujas, Tárcoles, Pigres, Las Mantas and Herradura were part of the first district of the canton of Puntarenas, without even mentioning the existence from Jaco. In 1927 the school was inaugurated with the name Mixta de Jacó in the second administration of Mr. Ricardo Jiménez Oreamuno. The Catholic church was built in 1946. It was not until 50 years after Law No. 20 was issued and by executive decree No. 15 (referring to the Administrative Territorial Division of the Republic) of February 25, 1965, that Jacó constituted a hamlet of the first Puntarenas district; In the same year, by law No. 3549 of September 16, Jacó became the ninth district of the canton of Puntarenas, whose head was established in the Jacó neighborhood. During the archbishopric of Monsignor Carlos Humberto Rodríguez Quirós, fourth archbishop of Costa Rica, in 1969, the parish was erected, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary; which is currently suffragan of the diocese of Puntarenas of the ecclesiastical province of Costa Rica, since it is part of the Vicariate Costa.
